Hello and welcome to Soul Mothers!
This website was established in 2007 by a paediatric nurse
and mother who was alarmed at the lack of knowledge and support of
breastfeeding within our health care systems and communities.
Breastfeeding has become an art that has increasingly become shut
away behind closed doors. Its
fundamentals are being lost because the traditional ways of learning through
observation, communication and support between mothers, daughters and other social
networks of women does not happen the way it used to. Statistics show that whilst between 60-70% of
women begin breastfeeding in hospital only 20-22% of them will still be
breastfeeding by the time their baby is six months old – what a tragedy when in
the majority of these cases the right support networks could have seen these
women successfully breastfeeding their babies for the first twelve
months and beyond whilst reaping the health benefits of doing so.
For those who are able, the choice to breastfeed is a big deal. It is something that affects the health and economy of our world. Breastfeeding is so important to the health
and development of our babies and yet the importance of it is not given in
education to mothers during their pregnancy and early post partum days. This means that a mothers' decision on whether she will breastfeed her baby may be made based on a
social perspective and misinformation instead of all the overwhelming facts available. Western society has also been very unsupportive of the breastfeeding mother. There is so much information given to mothers to protect their babies during pregnancy yet little given on providing the best start in life to their baby post partum and how breastfeeding contributes so importantly to this.
This website aims to give mothers access to a
wide range of high quality breastfeeding products that will help encourage and
support mothers during a time which can for a variety of reasons be challenging. Although the benefits of breastfeeding cannot
be stressed enough not every mother finds it easy and many problems can arise leading to early weaning from the breast. In many cases seeking help
early on when problems are first encountered can help mothers through these challenges and go on to breastfeed successfully if they wish to do so. There are many community help groups such as your local Child
Health, Lactation Consultants and the Australian Breastfeeding Association who are also excellent
support networks to mothers outside of this website.
We have also revamped our website to include a discussion forum
for mothers to be able form a support network with each other and discuss various
breastfeeding and parenting issues.
Please listen to views expressed on our forums but please seek
professional help if needed as the forum does not take the place of
medical/professional advice.
We hope you enjoy our site and are always happy to receive any feedback
you may have on our products and services. We also aim to keep
expanding our product range so keep checking back for new products and
services.
